Are Romance Novels Just ‘Bodice Rippers’?
Thursday, July 31st, 2008 Jul 31st, 2008 leave a response

After you read this post on Reading While Black , I’ll let you decide.

Here’s what I do know about the romance genre:

• Revenue from romance fiction is 1.37 billion dollars and outsells every market category by twenty-six (26%) with the exception of religion/inspirational books
• Romance fiction has the same characteristics as any other fiction novel with one distinction: it centers on the love between two people and provides an optimistic ending. Moreover, the read is fresh, smart, and diverse

Until next time – stay well and be blessed!

  1. LaConnie,

I must admit that I chuckled when I read MSN’s poll description for romance reading as “Bodice Rippers!” When I think back to those old black and white films (you know the silent ones), I do remember seeing some bodices being ripped in those. But then you needed that dramatic action since sound was not included in those early films. But I don’t recall reading any bodice ripping scenes in any of the romances I’ve read over the years – LOL! Still, this description of the genre is what plenty folks think, I’m sure. Do you think writers in this genre will ever dispel the myth?
