Welcome Dyanne Davis and Friends

Author Dyanne DavisDyanne is my Romance Slam Jam partner in crime! I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Dyanne at the 2005 RSJ in Dallas, TX and we’ve been glued to the hip ever since. And you absolutely, positively must stop by her website to check out her latest release, On My Knees.

Which comes first, the story, the characters or the setting?

For me it’s generally a vague idea. Something generally happens in my life or around me and it has such a profound effect on me that I feel I must write about it. Generally it has to do with some kind of injustice, righting a wrong. But I cloak it so well that I think the very few people actually get the underlying message. Of course Sidney, my editor gets it. LOL. I had thought I was hiding it from her as well. I’m going to give you a quick example (quick for me that is) of what I’m talking about. I started writing my vampire series because a very good friend thought I was going to hell for writing romance. So My writing about vampires was meant to say, so now tell me where you think I’m going. And making Adam a priest, having him go to church, quote scriptures, read the bible…..

How far off the original question have I gone?
LOL. My short answer to the question is none of the above. I get an idea and sit down and begin to write. I know nothing about the characters or where the story is gong to go when I begin writing.

What are the elements of a great romance for you?
I like stories that have realism. I’m not into fairy-tales, I like flawed characters who make stupid mistakes. I like stories that I can tell someone, hey read this book, because to me they would benefit in their own lives by seeing how a problem they had was resolved. I’m not into escapism with romances. I escape with a good paranormal.

What is the hardest part of writing/the easiest for you?
The hardest part of writing is not the actual writing but what comes after, trying to sell the idea to my agent, to editors and when it’s sold hoping the general public will like it, knowing that not all of them will. The easiest part of writing is THE WRITING.

Are you in control of your characters or do they control you?
LOL. The best I can hope for is a collaboration. Sometimes I’m allowed to put in my opinions, sometimes not. The characters writer the first draft and I’m allowed to clean things up and make changes during the rewrites.
